Message from Edward Gordon about "Sun Porch" While on a vacation to Rhode Island in June 1997, Joa and I were staying in a charming bed and breakfast in Narragansett that has a 5 star breakfast (The 1900 House, 59 Kingstown Road, 401-789-7971.) The hosts, knowing that I am always looking for interesting, old homes to photograph, recommended a visit to the Eisenhower House in Newport, RI. The Eisenhower House was President Eisenhower's vacation home during the summers of 1958 and 1960 and is now a state park. I arrived too early to get inside but it was a beautiful, sunny morning so I photographed a porch which resulted in the painting "June" and then noticed the sun porch off to the side. Through the glass door, I was able to take enough photos to create a painting. At first, I painted "Monday Morning" as a study to see how difficult it would be to paint wicker before I attempted the entire scene. It was very difficult so I decided to stop then. My desire to paint the entire scene stayed with me and the result is "Sun Porch." |
